The Appalachian Mountains have always been known for its challenging terrain. Steep hollows, rocky cliffs and deep gorges – it’s not always easy to live in Appalachia, but we wouldn’t have it any other way!

But with the beauty of the Appalachian Mountains also comes the challenge of living and building here. Erosion control, slope stabilization and other environmental sustainability methods are critical in our area. At Cook’s Excavating, environmentally sustainable solutions are at the core of every one of our projects. Check out all of our environmental services below!

Hydroseeding

Description: Hydroseeding involves spraying a mixture of seed, Lime, mulch, fertilizer, and water onto the ground to establish vegetation quickly. This method is effective for erosion control and landscaping.

Benefits: Hydroseeding helps prevent soil erosion, promotes healthy vegetation growth, and enhances the aesthetics of construction sites. Typical germination for our hydroseeding bled is around 5 days.

Slope Stabilization

Description: Slope stabilization techniques are used to prevent soil erosion on steep or unstable terrain. This may involve the use of retaining walls, geotextiles, GeoWeb, or vegetation planting.

Benefits: Slope stabilization ensures the safety and stability of construction sites, reducing the risk of landslides and erosion.

Erosion and Sediment Control

Description: Implementing erosion and sediment control measures is crucial to minimize soil runoff and protect water quality during construction activities. This includes the use of erosion control blankets, silt fences, Compost Filter socks, Geosynthetics, and sediment basins.

Benefits: Proper erosion and sediment control prevent soil and contaminants from entering nearby water bodies, preserving the environment. Cook’s Excavating can also work with state licensed engineers to provide a custom designed and permitted SWPPP or stormwater protection prevention plan to meet the needs of your site and desired development area.

Filter Sock

Description: Filter socks are tubular devices filled with filter media used to filter sediment-laden water. They are often placed around construction sites to capture sediment and prevent it from reaching waterways.

Benefits: Filter socks help maintain water quality by trapping sediments and pollutants, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.

Silt Sock

Description: Silt socks are similar to filter socks and are used for erosion control and sediment filtration. They are commonly placed along the perimeter of construction sites and other areas susceptible to erosion.

Benefits: Silt socks reduce soil erosion, improve water quality, and protect natural habitats.

Silt Fence

Description: Silt fences are temporary barriers made of geotextile fabric used to trap sediment and prevent it from flowing into sensitive areas like streams or lakes.

Benefits: Silt fences are essential for complying with environmental regulations and safeguarding water bodies from contamination.

Mulching

Description: Mulching involves spreading organic or inorganic material on the ground’s surface to conserve moisture, prevent erosion, and enhance soil fertility.

Benefits: Mulching helps retain soil moisture, reduce erosion, and improve soil health, fostering the growth of vegetation.

Seed and Vegetation Preparation

Description: This service includes preparing the seedbed and selecting appropriate seeds or vegetation for reclamation and landscaping projects.

Benefits: Proper seed and vegetation preparation ensure successful revegetation efforts, beautify landscapes, and restore natural habitats.

Proprietary Nitrogen and Canadian Mined Peat Moss Hydroseed Enhancement

Description: Application of proprietary nitrogen and Canadian-mined peat moss to hydroseeding efforts. This product is used where existing soil conditions are challenging and is used as an alternative to compost products.

Benefits: This product is used where existing soil conditions are challenging and is used as an alternative to compost products. Peat moss holds 26 times its weight in water, improving water retention to the soil and aiding in the growth process.
